Description of the romanization tool
This tool converts text in Russian Cyrillic into Latin (Roman) alphabet and vice versa. The tool also counts the number of words, characters and bytes in both texts and allows quick switch of alphabets.
Romanization is the conversion of text from a non-Latin writing system (in our case Russian Cyrillic alphabet) into the Roman (Latin) alphabet, facilitating readability, pronunciation, and computer input for non-native speakers. Deromanization is the same process, but in opposite direction.
Key aspects of romanization
- Transliteration: character-by-character conversion, focusing on representing written text (e.g., "Москва" to "Moskva").
- Transcription: focuses on representing the sounds, either phonemically (speech units) or phonetically (precise sounds).
In the context of this tool, we use term „Transliteration“ to designate the process of romanization and deromanization (Russian Cyrillic ⇄ Latin).
Apart from transliteration, the tool offers additional functionalities such as:
- count the number of words, characters and bytes in both texts,
- quick switch of alphabets with automatic transliteration (romanization or
deromanization),
- by clicking the Switch alphabets button (
) or
- using the drop-down list,
- by clicking the Switch alphabets button (
- easy text input,
- using the paste button, (
),
- using the paste button, (
- quick copying of transliterated text,
- using the copy button (
),
- using the copy button (
- deleting text,
- using the clear button (
).
- using the clear button (
This text tool is using BGN/PCGN 1947 system for romanization of the Russian language, with features such as:
- Bidirectional conversion (Cyrillic ↔ Latin),
- Context-sensitive handling of Е/е and Ё/ё,
- Proper case preservation,
- Special character handling (ъ, ь).
How do we count the number of words in a text?
The number of words in the text (word count) is calculated by dividing the text by:
- spaces,
- certain punctuation marks (.,:;!?/),
- line breaks (text breaks),
and then counting the number of resulting text parts (i.e. "words").
These do not have to be real words in the semantic (meaningful) sense, because in our case "word" means any part of the text separated by aforementioned characters. Thus, for example, a number or special character separated by spaces, will be recognized as a word (eg. "123 * 456 %" will be counted as 4 words).
How do we calculate the length of the text?
Letters, punctuation marks, special characters, spaces, new line marks (text breaks) and in general, any type of characters are all taken into account when calculating the length of the text.
Paste button
In some older browser versions and in Firefox (Mozilla Firefox), the
Paste button () does not work. Then
paste the copied text as usual.
